How to Convert SGPA to CGPA

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated for each individual semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all your semester SGPAs, where the weight is the number of credits in each semester. This converter handles both equal-credit and unequal-credit semester scenarios.

Use the Convert tab for the accurate credit-weighted calculation โ€” especially important when different semesters have different total credit loads. Use the Quick Average tab if all your semesters have equal credits and you just want a fast approximation.

SGPA to CGPA Formula

CGPA = ฮฃ(SGPAi ร— Creditsi) รท ฮฃ(Creditsi)

Where i = each completed semester

Example with 4 semesters:
Sem 1: SGPA 7.5, 20 credits โ†’ 150.0
Sem 2: SGPA 8.0, 22 credits โ†’ 176.0
Sem 3: SGPA 7.8, 22 credits โ†’ 171.6
Sem 4: SGPA 8.2, 24 credits โ†’ 196.8
CGPA = (150.0 + 176.0 + 171.6 + 196.8) รท 88 = 694.4 รท 88 = 7.89

If every semester has exactly the same total credits, CGPA simplifies to the arithmetic mean of all SGPAs. However, most engineering programs have varying credit loads each semester, so the weighted formula always gives the most accurate result.

Quick Reference: SGPA to CGPA Examples

Equal Credits Scenario (20 per semester):

4 semesters: 7.5, 8.0, 7.8, 8.2 โ†’ CGPA = (7.5+8.0+7.8+8.2)/4 = 7.88

Unequal Credits Scenario:

Sem 1 (18 cr, SGPA 7.5) + Sem 2 (24 cr, SGPA 8.3): CGPA = (135+199.2)รท42 = 7.96

Frequently Asked Questions

If your semesters have different numbers of total credits, a simple (unweighted) average of SGPAs will give a slightly different result than the true CGPA. The correct method is to weight each SGPA by its semester's credit count. A semester with 24 credits contributes more to your CGPA than one with 16 credits. Always use credit-weighted calculation for the most accurate result.
Enter only your completed semesters. If you are currently in your fifth semester and have results for four semesters, enter four rows. Your in-progress semester grades are not finalized and should not be included โ€” adding them would give a premature result. Once your current semester results are declared, add that semester's SGPA and credits to update your CGPA.
The core formula is the same (credit-weighted average of SGPAs), but the grade point scale and letter grade to point mapping can differ. CBSE uses a 10-point scale where A1 = 10 points. VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and many other affiliating universities follow UGC guidelines with O=10, A+=9, A=8, etc. Some universities include internal assessment and external exam marks differently. Always refer to your specific university's grade regulations.
When you clear a backlog (arrear) subject, the improved grade replaces the failing grade in your CGPA calculation at most universities. The credits and grade points from the cleared subject are updated in the semester they originally belonged to, recalculating that SGPA, which then flows through to your CGPA. The exact handling depends on your university's re-examination and grade entry policy โ€” check with your academic office for the precise treatment.
The formula depends on your university. The most widely referenced formulas are: CBSE: CGPA ร— 9.5; VTU: CGPA ร— 10 โˆ’ 7.5; Mumbai University: 7.1 ร— CGPA + 11; Generic approximation: CGPA ร— 10. For the most accurate result, use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator which supports all these systems. Many employers and institutions accept a CGPA equivalent percentage as a standard measure.
