How to Use This SGPA Calculator

Enter each subject from your current semester with its grade points (on a 0–10 scale) and the credit load assigned to that subject. The calculator instantly computes your SGPA — the Semester Grade Point Average — for that semester using the weighted average formula.

Use the Calculate SGPA tab to find your current semester GPA. Switch to the SGPA to CGPA tab to enter your individual semester SGPAs and credits to see your overall Cumulative GPA across all completed semesters.

SGPA Formula

SGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits in Semester

Example: Maths (9 GP × 4 cr) + Physics (7 GP × 4 cr) + Chemistry (8 GP × 3 cr)
= (36 + 28 + 24) ÷ (4 + 4 + 3) = 88 ÷ 11 = 8.00 SGPA

Each subject's grade points are multiplied by its credit weight. Higher-credit subjects carry more influence on your SGPA. This is why performing well in 4-credit core courses matters more than in 1-credit lab courses.

SGPA to CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits in Semester) ÷ Total Credits Across All Semesters

Example: Sem 1 (SGPA 7.8, 18 cr) + Sem 2 (SGPA 8.1, 20 cr)
= (7.8×18 + 8.1×20) ÷ (18+20) = (140.4 + 162.0) ÷ 38 = 7.96 CGPA

Semesters with more credits have a proportionally larger impact on your overall CGPA. A strong performance in a credit-heavy semester (such as the third or fourth year with more core subjects) will improve your CGPA more than a strong performance in a lighter semester.

Step-by-Step Example

Scenario: Arjun is a second-year student at Anna University with five subjects this semester:

Engineering Mathematics II (4 credits, grade 8) → 32 points

Circuits & Networks (4 credits, grade 7) → 28 points

Electronic Devices (3 credits, grade 9) → 27 points

Digital Electronics (4 credits, grade 8) → 32 points

English for Engineers (3 credits, grade 7) → 21 points

Total: 140 points ÷ 18 credits = SGPA: 7.78

With Sem 1 SGPA of 7.5 (20 credits): CGPA = (7.5×20 + 7.78×18) ÷ 38 = 7.63

Frequently Asked Questions

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated using only the subjects from a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) aggregates all semesters completed so far. SGPA gives you a snapshot of how you performed this term, while CGPA reflects your overall academic standing across your entire program. Most Indian universities display both on your marksheet or grade card.
VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses a 10-point grading scale. SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) ÷ ΣCi, where Ci is the credit for subject i and GPi is the grade point. Letter grades map to grade points: O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, P=4, F=0. The SGPA is computed separately for theory and practical components in some programs.
Yes. If you perform better this semester than in previous semesters, your SGPA will be higher than your current CGPA. This is common when students improve over time. Conversely, a weak semester brings down your CGPA even if your previous semesters were strong. The CGPA is always a weighted aggregate of all your semester performances.
You can rearrange the CGPA formula: Required SGPA = (Target CGPA × Total Credits − Current CGPA × Current Credits) ÷ This Semester's Credits. For example, if your current CGPA is 7.0 across 80 credits and you want a CGPA of 7.2 after a 20-credit semester: Required SGPA = (7.2 × 100 − 7.0 × 80) ÷ 20 = (720 − 560) ÷ 20 = 8.0. Use the SGPA to CGPA tab to check different scenarios.
Most companies and graduate programs use your CGPA as the primary filter, not individual semester SGPAs. However, some companies check for upward trends — consistently improving SGPAs can be highlighted in interviews to show improvement. A single low semester is less damaging if you recover in subsequent semesters. Certain competitive programs and PSU recruitments may look at your latest semester SGPA as well.
