How VTU Calculates CGPA

VTU uses the standard weighted average formula across all subjects and all semesters:

CGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)

Example calculation:

Mathematics (A, 4 credits): 9 × 4 = 36

Physics (B, 4 credits): 8 × 4 = 32

C Programming (S, 3 credits): 10 × 3 = 30

CGPA = (36 + 32 + 30) ÷ (4 + 4 + 3) = 98 ÷ 11 = 8.91

VTU CGPA to Percentage Formula

VTU uses a specific formula that accounts for a grade threshold offset:

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

For example, a CGPA of 8.0 corresponds to (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%. This formula is officially issued by VTU and used in all marksheets from 2015 onwards (Scheme 2015/2018/2021).
