How Anna University Calculates CGPA
CGPA is calculated as the weighted average of all grade points, where the weight is the credit value of each subject:
Example: Suppose you have three subjects:
Mathematics (O, 4 credits): 10 × 4 = 40
Physics (A+, 3 credits): 9 × 3 = 27
Chemistry (A, 4 credits): 8 × 4 = 32
CGPA = (40 + 27 + 32) ÷ (4 + 3 + 4) = 99 ÷ 11 = 9.00
CGPA to Percentage Formula (Anna University)
Anna University uses a simple multiplier formula:
For example, a CGPA of 8.5 corresponds to 85%. This formula is official and accepted by most employers and government bodies when issuing experience certificates.

Tips to Improve Your Anna University CGPA
- Attend internal assessments diligently — they contribute 20% of total marks.
- Target O grades (91+) in high-credit subjects like Mathematics and core engineering subjects.
- Labs and workshop subjects (typically 2–4 credits) are easier to score 'O' in — maximize those.
- ARREAR subjects (RA) bring your CGPA to zero for that subject — clear backlogs quickly.
