How to Use the Grade Comparison Calculator

In the Compare tab, select any US letter grade to instantly see its equivalent across six international grading systems: US GPA (4.0), US percentage, UK degree classification, Indian CGPA (10-point), German grading (1โ€“5), and French scoring (0โ€“20).

In the GPA Compare tab, enter multiple GPA values with credit hours to calculate a combined weighted average GPA. This is useful for combining semester GPAs, calculating a cumulative GPA from multiple transcripts, or estimating a combined GPA for transfer applications.

International Grading System Overview

United States (4.0 GPA Scale)

The US 4-point GPA system assigns numerical values (0.0โ€“4.0) to letter grades. Most US universities use the plus/minus scale: A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, and so on down to F = 0.0.

United Kingdom (Degree Classification)

UK undergraduate degrees are classified rather than graded on a continuous scale: First Class (1st), Upper Second (2:1), Lower Second (2:2), Third Class, and Fail. UK percentages are graded more harshly โ€” a 70% is equivalent to an A in the US.

India (10-Point CGPA)

Most Indian universities use a 10-point CGPA system. Grades above 8.0 are considered excellent, 6.5โ€“7.9 is good, and below 6.0 is below average at most institutions. Approximate conversion: US GPA = India CGPA รท 2.5.

Germany (1โ€“5 Scale)

Germany uses a reversed scale where 1 is the best and 5 is failing โ€” opposite to the intuition of most international students. A grade of 1.0 (Sehr Gut / Very Good) is the highest distinction, while 4.0 (Ausreichend / Sufficient) is the minimum passing grade. Anything above 4.0 is a fail.

France (0โ€“20 Scale)

France grades on a 20-point scale where 20/20 is perfect and 10/20 is the minimum pass. Scores above 16 are rare and exceptional. The average French university score is around 12/20, which corresponds roughly to a US B (3.0 GPA).

Example: A US grade of B+ (3.3 GPA) equals approximately:

UK: Upper Second Class (2:1) | India: 8.3 CGPA | Germany: 1.7โ€“2.0 | France: 17.6/20

Frequently Asked Questions

To combine two semester GPAs, use the weighted average formula. Enter each semester's GPA and total credit hours in the GPA Compare tab. For example: Semester 1 = 3.5 GPA (15 credits), Semester 2 = 3.0 GPA (18 credits). Combined GPA = (3.5 ร— 15 + 3.0 ร— 18) / (15 + 18) = (52.5 + 54) / 33 = 106.5 / 33 = 3.23 GPA.
A 3.0 US GPA generally corresponds to an Upper Second Class (2:1) in the UK system. Most UK postgraduate programs accept applications from students with a 2:1 or above, so a 3.0 US GPA typically meets minimum requirements. Competitive programs at Oxford, Cambridge, and other top institutions often prefer the equivalent of a 3.5+ US GPA (First Class or high 2:1).
The most widely used conversion formula is: US GPA = 4 โ€“ (3/4) ร— (German grade โ€“ 1). So a German 1.0 = US 4.0 (A), 2.0 = US 3.25 (B+), 3.0 = US 2.5 (B-), 4.0 = US 1.75 (C). For official applications, many US universities and evaluation services use slightly different conversion tables. WES (World Education Services) is the most recognized credential evaluation service for this purpose.
France's 20-point scale is a historical convention going back to the 19th century. The system is deliberately calibrated so that perfect scores are extremely rare โ€” professors in France rarely award 20/20 or even 18/20. The average score is typically around 12โ€“13/20. This means a French 14/20 is an excellent grade, roughly equivalent to a US A- or B+. When converting, it helps to know the context rather than treating 14/20 as 70% in the US sense.
Yes โ€” the GPA Compare tab lets you combine GPAs from multiple institutions or time periods using a weighted average by credit hours. This is useful for calculating a combined undergraduate GPA from a transfer situation, or for estimating the combined impact of a master's degree GPA alongside an undergraduate GPA. Graduate admissions offices often look at both undergraduate and graduate GPAs separately, so check specific program requirements.
