How to Use the GPA Scale Converter

In the Convert tab, enter your GPA on any scale, select the source scale (4.0, 4.33, 5.0, 10.0, or percentage), and choose your target scale. The calculator converts instantly and also shows all other scale equivalents at the bottom. Use the All Scales tab to see your GPA expressed on every scale simultaneously — ideal when you need to fill out international applications.

GPA Scale Conversion Method

Step 1: Normalize = GPA ÷ Scale Maximum
Step 2: Convert = Normalized × Target Scale Maximum

Example: 3.5 on 4.0 scale → 10.0 scale
Normalized = 3.5 ÷ 4.0 = 0.875
Result = 0.875 × 10.0 = 8.75

This proportional method is the most universal approach. It assumes the same relative academic standing across all scales — a 3.5/4.0 GPA (87.5th percentile of maximum) converts to 87.5% of any other scale's maximum.

GPA Scale Reference

4.0 Scale (US standard): Most common in US colleges and universities. A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0

4.33 Scale (US+): Used by some US schools that award A+ = 4.3. Slightly more granular at the top.

5.0 Scale: Used by some US high schools for weighted GPAs (AP/honors classes get +1 point). Also used in some international systems.

10.0 Scale (India): Standard in IITs, NITs, and most Indian universities using the CGPA system. O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6.

Percentage (%): Used in many countries as the primary grading metric. Commonly used in India (alongside CGPA), South Asia, Middle East, and Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

The proportional method provides a widely accepted approximation, but individual schools and countries sometimes use custom, non-proportional conversion tables. For example, some European countries have non-linear grading where a score of 15/20 in France may not directly proportionate to a 3.0 US GPA. For official credential evaluation purposes, always use a recognized evaluation service like WES, ECE, or NACES member organizations. This calculator is best used for quick estimates and personal planning.
The 4.33 scale awards A+ = 4.3 (some schools use 4.33) instead of capping at 4.0. Schools that use this scale include some US colleges and universities, as well as many Canadian institutions. The practical difference is small — only students with A+ grades are affected. The 4.33 scale provides slightly more differentiation at the top of the academic range. When a school averages to 4.33, a student with all A+ grades has a higher GPA than one with all A grades, unlike on the standard 4.0 scale.
US high schools use a 5.0 weighted scale where AP, IB, and honors classes earn an extra point (A in AP = 5.0 instead of 4.0). When applying to college, the admissions office typically recalculates your GPA on the unweighted 4.0 scale, removing the bonus points. A 4.2 on a 5.0 weighted scale is not the same as a 4.2/5.0 GPA on this converter — use the unweighted 4.0 GPA (which will typically be lower) for college applications and graduate school comparisons.
Use the 10.0 → 4.0 conversion: US GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. For example, CGPA 8.5 → (8.5/10) × 4 = 3.4 US GPA. This proportional method is the most commonly accepted quick conversion. For formal US graduate school applications, many programs accept CGPA directly on the 10-point scale and their admissions committees are familiar with it. For scholarship applications and programs that require a 4.0 GPA number, a WES evaluation provides an official certified conversion.
GPA and percentage are related but not interchangeable without knowing your school's specific grading scale. Many US schools use letter grade boundaries where 90–100% = A (4.0), 80–89% = B (3.0), etc. — but the exact boundaries vary. Some schools use 93–100% for A, others use 90–100%. Additionally, GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points, while percentage is a raw score average. A direct proportional conversion (as this calculator uses) gives a standardized estimate but may not match your institution's specific calculation.
