Convert Nepali Grades to US GPA
How Nepalese University Grading Works
Nepal's higher education system is governed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) Nepal and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The predominant grading method — particularly at Tribhuvan University (TU), the country's largest — is a percentage and Division system derived from the British colonial academic tradition.
The four passing classifications are: Distinction (80%+) — the highest academic honour; First Division (60–79%) — strong academic performance; Second Division (45–59%) — average pass; Third Division (32–44%) — minimum pass. Scores below 32% are recorded as Fail. Some programmes — particularly graduate courses — may have a pass threshold of 40% or 50%.
In contrast, Kathmandu University (KU) and several private universities affiliated with foreign institutions use a credit-based 4.0 GPA letter-grade system directly compatible with the US model. Pokhara University uses a similar modern GPA system. TU is undertaking gradual reform to introduce GPA-based transcripts, but many existing bachelor's degrees still use the Division system.
Key Nepalese institutions: Tribhuvan University — founded 1959, the oldest and largest university in Nepal with over 400,000 students across 60 campuses; Kathmandu University — a smaller private university known for its international affiliations and modern curriculum; Purbanchal University — major eastern Nepal institution; Pokhara University — using a GPA-based system. TU degrees are the most commonly evaluated by WES and NACES members.
Nepal to US GPA Conversion Table
| Percentage | Division | US GPA | US Letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80–100% | Distinction | 4.00 | A |
| 60–79% | First Division | 3.50 | B+ |
| 45–59% | Second Division | 2.50 | C+ |
| 32–44% | Third Division (Pass) | 1.50 | D+ |
| < 32% | Fail | 0.00 | F |
Conversion Formula
Division-based conversion (recommended): Match your final percentage to the Division band above.
Approximate formula: US GPA ≈ (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4.0
Example: 72% → 72 ÷ 100 × 4.0 = 2.88 GPA (approximate — use band: First Division = 3.5)
The Division band conversion is standard for WES evaluation of TU transcripts. For Kathmandu University transcripts using a native 4.0 GPA system, no conversion is needed — use the GPA directly.
Conversion Example
Student: Priya studies BSc Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) at Tribhuvan University and is applying to US MS programmes.
Her semester percentages: Semester 5: 74%, Semester 6: 78%, Semester 7: 82%, Semester 8 (final): 79%.
Overall percentage: (74 + 78 + 82 + 79) / 4 = 78.25% — First Division
US GPA equivalent: 78.25% = First Division = 3.50 / 4.0 (B+/A-) — Competitive for mid-tier US CS master's programmes. Distinction (80%+) would strengthen applications to top-10 programmes.
