How Bangladesh's Grading System Works

Bangladeshi universities use a 4.0 or 5.0 CGPA system, with the 4.0 scale becoming the standard for modern institutions following the National Education Policy. The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has standardized grading across public universities such as Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Rajshahi University, and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), as well as private universities.

The standard Bangladesh grading system (4.0 scale): A+ (80–100% = 4.0), A (75–79% = 3.75), A- (70–74% = 3.5), B+ (65–69% = 3.25), B (60–64% = 3.0), B- (55–59% = 2.75), C+ (50–54% = 2.5), C (45–49% = 2.25), D (40–44% = 2.0), and F (below 40% = 0.0). The passing threshold is 40%, making the Bangladeshi system slightly more lenient on minimum pass than many other systems.

BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) is particularly well-known internationally and is considered the top engineering institution in Bangladesh. BUET graduates regularly gain admission to US graduate programs in computer science, engineering, and related fields. Dhaka University is the oldest and most prestigious general university in Bangladesh.

Some older Bangladeshi institutions still use a percentage or first/second division classification system, but the UGC grading policy of 2009 mandated the adoption of the CGPA system across all recognized institutions.

Conversion Formula

Bangladesh CGPA/Percentage → US 4.0 GPA:
A+ (4.00 / 80–100%) → 4.0 GPA
A (3.75 / 75–79%) → 3.75 GPA
A- (3.50 / 70–74%) → 3.5 GPA
B+ (3.25 / 65–69%) → 3.25 GPA
B (3.00 / 60–64%) → 3.0 GPA
B- (2.75 / 55–59%) → 2.75 GPA
C+ (2.50 / 50–54%) → 2.5 GPA
C (2.25 / 45–49%) → 2.25 GPA
D (2.00 / 40–44%) → 2.0 GPA
F (0.00 / <40%) → 0.0 GPA

Note: Bangladesh uses a 4.0 max; grade points correspond approximately to US GPA values

Worked Example

Student: Rafiqul, BSc Computer Science and Engineering, BUET

Rafiqul's CGPA is 3.6/4.0 (approximately 72–74%, A- range).

3.6 CGPA → US GPA: 3.5 (roughly A-). BUET's rigorous engineering program means a 3.6 CGPA is highly competitive. BUET graduates with this score regularly receive offers from top US CS and engineering graduate programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Bangladeshi 4.0 CGPA scale is very close to the US 4.0 GPA. For most purposes, your Bangladeshi CGPA converts directly to a US GPA at the same numeric value. For example, a 3.5 CGPA from BUET ≈ 3.5 US GPA. The main difference is that Bangladeshi grade cutoffs differ slightly (e.g., A+ requires 80%+ vs 90%+ in the US), so your CGPA may reflect slightly higher achievement at the same percentage.
Yes, a 3.5 CGPA from BUET is competitive for US master's and PhD programs. BUET is recognized as one of the top engineering schools in South Asia, and its graduates regularly gain admission to MIT, Stanford, CMU, Georgia Tech, and other top US engineering programs. A 3.5 from BUET combined with strong GRE scores and research experience is an excellent application profile.
The minimum passing grade at most Bangladeshi universities is 40% (D grade, CGPA 2.0). This is lower than many countries' passing thresholds. Students who fail to achieve 40% in a course receive an F (0.0 CGPA). Graduating typically requires a minimum cumulative CGPA of 2.0 or above across all courses.
Both institutions are recognized by US graduate programs, but BUET has stronger international recognition specifically for STEM fields (engineering, computer science). Dhaka University is recognized for humanities, social sciences, and sciences. For engineering and CS applications, BUET is better known to US faculty and admissions committees. Both institutions' graduates are successful in securing US graduate school placements.
Some US graduate programs and licensing boards require a WES or NACES credential evaluation for Bangladeshi degrees. Many graduate programs at major US research universities (especially in engineering) accept BUET and Dhaka University transcripts directly. Professional licensing (engineering licensure, medical licensure) will require a formal credential evaluation. Check the specific requirements of your target institution.
