How Colombian University Grading Works
Colombia's higher education system is regulated by the Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN) and accredited through the Consejo Nacional de Acreditación (CNA). Colombian universities use a 0.0–5.0 numeric scale where grades are typically expressed to one decimal place.
The minimum passing grade is 3.0 (Aprobado). Grades of 4.6–5.0 are classified as Sobresaliente (Outstanding); 4.0–4.5 as Sobresaliente (Excellent); 3.5–3.9 as Bueno (Good); 3.0–3.4 as Aprobado (Passing). Grades below 3.0 — either Deficiente (2.0–2.9) or Malo (1.0–1.9) — constitute a failure (Reprobado). A score of 5.0 is the highest achievable grade in the system.
Colombia's academic calendar typically follows two semesters per year. The cumulative average (promedio acumulado) is calculated as a weighted average of all course grades weighted by credit hours (créditos). Most undergraduate programmes require 144–160 credit hours for graduation, and a cumulative average of at least 3.0–3.5 is needed to maintain academic standing, depending on the institution.
Key Colombian institutions: Universidad de los Andes — Colombia's top-ranked private university, consistently placed in QS Latin America top 10; Universidad Nacional de Colombia — the largest public university with campuses in Bogotá, Medellín, and other cities; Pontificia Universidad Javeriana — Jesuit university with strong programmes in law, medicine, and humanities; Universidad de Antioquia — leading public university in Medellín. Colombian degrees (pregrado/licenciatura for bachelor's, maestría for master's) are recognised under US credential evaluation standards.
