How Chilean University Grading Works
Chile's higher education system is regulated by the Ministerio de Educación (MINEDUC) and accredited through the Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (CNA). Chilean universities use a 1.0–7.0 numeric scale where 7.0 is the maximum grade and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade.
The grade classifications are: 6.5–7.0 — Excelente (Excellent); 6.0–6.4 — Muy Bueno (Very Good); 5.5–5.9 — Bueno (Good); 5.0–5.4 — Bueno Standard; 4.5–4.9 — Suficiente (Sufficient); 4.0–4.4 — Aprobado (Minimum Pass). Scores below 4.0 are Reprobado (Fail). Grades are typically expressed to one decimal place (e.g., 5.7, 6.2), and the scale is used consistently across public and private universities in Chile.
Chilean undergraduate programmes (Licenciatura) typically take 4–5 years and lead to a professional title. The cumulative average (promedio ponderado) is weighted by course credits (SCT-Chile, the Chilean credit transfer system aligned with ECTS). Graduate degrees include Magíster (master's, 2 years) and Doctorado (PhD). The Chilean system was significantly reformed following the 2012 education reform, moving toward a new accreditation framework.
Key Chilean institutions: Universidad de Chile — the oldest and most prestigious public university, founded 1842, consistently QS top 300, strong in medicine, law, and social sciences; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) — private Catholic university ranked QS top 200 in Latin America, especially strong in engineering and business; Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) — well-regarded for business and economics; Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) — leading engineering institution. PUC and Universidad de Chile are Chile's representatives in the QS World University Rankings top 500.

Conversion Formula
Approximate formula: US GPA ≈ (Chilean Grade − 1.0) ÷ 6.0 × 4.0
Example: 5.8 → (5.8 − 1.0) ÷ 6.0 × 4.0 = 4.8 ÷ 6.0 × 4.0 = 3.20 GPA
The formula provides a proportional estimate; however, the band-based table above is the standard used by WES and NACES evaluators. For official US university applications, use a credentialed evaluation service.
Conversion Example
Student: Sebastián studies Civil Engineering (Ingeniería Civil) at PUC Chile and is applying to a US master's programme in structural engineering.
His semester grades: Cálculo 6.2 (5 credits), Física 5.8 (5 credits), Estructuras 6.5 (4 credits), Mecánica de Suelos 5.5 (4 credits), Tesis 6.8 (6 credits).
Weighted Chilean promedio: (6.2×5 + 5.8×5 + 6.5×4 + 5.5×4 + 6.8×6) / 24 = (31.0 + 29.0 + 26.0 + 22.0 + 40.8) / 24 = 148.8 / 24 = 6.20
US GPA equivalent: 6.20 falls in 6.0–6.4 band = 3.70 / 4.0 (A-) — Highly competitive for US civil/structural engineering MS programmes.
