How to Convert Australian WAM to US GPA

Australia's Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is expressed as a percentage. To apply to US graduate programs or report your grades to US scholarship bodies, you need to convert your WAM to the 4.0 GPA scale. This converter uses a proportional band-based conversion that maps each Australian grade band (HD, D, CR, P, F) to its nearest US GPA equivalent.

Use the Convert tab for a single WAM value. Use the Classification tab to browse the full reference table showing WAM ranges, Australian degree classifications, US GPA equivalents, and honours eligibility — useful for graduate program applications and scholarship documents.

WAM to US GPA Conversion Method

HD (80–100%): US GPA = 4.0
D (70–79%): US GPA = 3.0 + (WAM − 70) ÷ 10 [range: 3.0–4.0]
CR (60–69%): US GPA = 2.0 + (WAM − 60) ÷ 10 [range: 2.0–3.0]
P (50–59%): US GPA = 1.0 + (WAM − 50) ÷ 10 [range: 1.0–2.0]
F (0–49%): US GPA = WAM ÷ 50 [range: 0–1.0]

Examples:
WAM 75 → D band → 3.0 + (75−70)÷10 = 3.50
WAM 68 → CR band → 2.0 + (68−60)÷10 = 2.80
WAM 82 → HD → 4.0

Step-by-Step Example

Scenario: Emma has a WAM of 75 from the University of Queensland and is applying to an MS Environmental Science program at a US university:

WAM 75 is in the Distinction (D) band (70–79%)

US GPA = 3.0 + (75 − 70) ÷ 10 = 3.0 + 0.5 = 3.50

Honours eligibility: eligible for Second Class Honours (Division I) / borderline First Class

Emma comfortably meets most US graduate program minimums of 3.0 GPA, and her WAM of 75 is competitive for programs requiring 3.3–3.5 equivalent.

Australian Degree Classification Explained

Australian bachelor's degrees with honours are classified based on overall performance, primarily WAM. Understanding these classifications helps US admissions officers contextualise Australian transcripts:

Frequently Asked Questions

Top US graduate programs receive applications from Australian students regularly and are generally familiar with the WAM system. However, less internationally diverse programs may not be, so it is always helpful to include a note on your application explaining the Australian system: "WAM is expressed as a percentage out of 100; a WAM of 75 (Distinction) is equivalent to approximately 3.5 US GPA." A credential evaluation from WES will also provide an official US GPA equivalent.
Yes. Australian universities include your WAM on official academic transcripts. It is usually printed alongside your degree classification and individual subject results. If your transcript does not show your WAM, contact your university's student records office — they can provide an official letter confirming your WAM. Some universities also have online student portals where you can view your current WAM at any time.
A WAM of 70 is in the Distinction band and converts to approximately 3.0 US GPA — typically the minimum floor for US PhD programs. Most competitive PhD programs at top 50 US universities look for the equivalent of a 3.5 GPA (WAM ~75). Your research experience, publications, GRE scores, and recommendation letters carry equal or greater weight than GPA for PhD admissions. A WAM of 70 with strong research credentials is still a competitive application.
Each Australian university sets its own honours cutoffs within broad TEQSA (Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency) guidelines. For example, University of Melbourne requires 75 WAM for H1, while some universities use 80. This means a First Class Honours from one university is not strictly equivalent to another. When applying internationally or domestically, including your university's specific honours classification framework alongside your WAM helps admissions committees make accurate comparisons.
