About WAEC Grading System

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is the regional body responsible for conducting the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia. The WAEC grading system uses a 9-point scale with corresponding GPA equivalents used by Nigerian universities and international institutions.

WAEC Grade Scale

A1 (Grade 1) = 4.0 — Excellent / Distinction
B2 (Grade 2) = 3.5 — Very Good
B3 (Grade 3) = 3.0 — Good
C4 (Grade 4) = 2.5 — Credit
C5 (Grade 5) = 2.0 — Credit
C6 (Grade 6) = 1.5 — Credit
D7 (Grade 7) = 1.0 — Pass
E8 (Grade 8) = 0.5 — Pass
F9 (Grade 9) = 0.0 — Fail

How WAEC GPA is Calculated

WAEC GPA is calculated as a weighted average of grade points across all subjects:

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Units) ÷ Σ(Credit Units)

In most WAEC contexts, each subject carries equal weight (1 credit unit), making the GPA simply the average grade point across all subjects.

Example for 8 subjects:

Math: B2 (3.5) + English: B3 (3.0) + Physics: C4 (2.5) + Chemistry: B3 (3.0)

Biology: C5 (2.0) + Economics: B2 (3.5) + Government: C4 (2.5) + Literature: C5 (2.0)

GPA = (3.5+3.0+2.5+3.0+2.0+3.5+2.5+2.0) ÷ 8 = 22.0 ÷ 8 = 2.75

WAEC Credits and University Admission

Nigerian universities and polytechnics use WAEC results as a primary qualification. For admission through JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board), students need:

Frequently Asked Questions

WAEC (WASSCE) is the West African equivalent of O-Levels (GCSE level in the UK). It is taken at the end of secondary school (SS3), typically around age 17–18. It covers a similar level of academic content to the British GCSE / O-Level examinations and is recognized internationally as a secondary school leaving qualification.
Yes. WAEC is accepted as a secondary school qualification for UK (UCAS) and US university applications. Most UK universities accept WAEC credits as equivalent to GCSE, and US universities consider it a recognized secondary school diploma. Additional A-Levels or NECO results may strengthen your application. Always check specific institution requirements.
WAEC (West African Examinations Council) is conducted twice yearly (May/June and November/December). NECO (National Examinations Council) is a Nigerian-only body that conducts its exams in June/July. Both are recognized by JAMB and Nigerian universities. WAEC is more internationally recognized; NECO is domestic.
WAEC allows candidates to register for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 9 subjects per sitting. Most Nigerian SS3 students take 8–9 subjects. The compulsory subjects are English Language and Mathematics. You can attempt additional subjects to improve your portfolio of credits.
To study Medicine and Surgery in Nigerian universities, you typically need A1–C6 (credit) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at WAEC. Most medical schools prefer B2–B3 or better in the sciences. You also need a high JAMB UTME score (usually 280+) and must pass the Post-UTME screening.
