Calculating Weighted Average GPA

When you have multiple letter grades with different credit hours, use a weighted average:

Average GPA = Sum(GPA Points × Credits) / Sum(Credits) Example: A (4.0 × 3cr) + B+ (3.3 × 3cr) + B (3.0 × 4cr) = 12.0 + 9.9 + 12.0 = 33.9 / 10 credits = 3.39 GPA

Frequently Asked Questions

A B+ equals 3.3 GPA points on the standard 4.0 scale. It corresponds to a percentage range of 87–89% and represents above-average academic work. For a 3-credit course, a B+ contributes 3.3 × 3 = 9.9 quality points toward your GPA calculation.
GPA points (or grade points) refer to the numerical value assigned to a letter grade (e.g., A = 4.0). Quality points are GPA points multiplied by credit hours — they represent the total "weight" of a grade in a specific course. Your GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by total credit hours.
Most US universities do not include Pass/Fail (P/F) grades in GPA calculations. A "Pass" earns credit hours toward your degree but contributes no quality points. A "Fail" also typically does not affect GPA but you receive no credit either. Check your institution's specific policy, as some schools do count P/F grades differently.
Straight B grades (all B, no plus or minus) give you exactly a 3.0 GPA — the standard "B average." If you have a mix of B+, B, and B- grades, your GPA will be somewhere between 2.7 and 3.3 depending on the distribution and credit hours of each course.
The 4.0 scale caps at 4.0, so both A and A+ earn the maximum 4.0 points at most US universities. The A+ distinction is honorary — it signals exceptional performance without a numeric GPA benefit. A small number of institutions do award 4.3 points for A+, but this is not the standard practice.
