How Russia's Grading System Works

Russian universities use a 5-point grading scale that has remained largely unchanged since the Soviet era. The scale is: 5 (Отлично / Excellent), 4 (Хорошо / Good), 3 (Удовлетворительно / Satisfactory), and 2 (Неудовлетворительно / Unsatisfactory/Fail). A grade of 1 is rarely used and typically indicates serious academic failure or dishonesty.

The 5-point scale is deceptively simple — in practice, many Russian professors distinguish between a strong 5 and a weak 5, often writing "5" with a minus to indicate slightly below perfect. Similarly, a "4+" (four with a plus) might appear on internal documents. However, official transcripts typically show only whole numbers.

All major Russian universities — Moscow State University (MGU/МГУ), Saint Petersburg State University, MIPT (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology), and others — use this system. The Bologna Process reforms have led some Russian institutions to adopt ECTS grades alongside the national system, particularly in programs with international partnerships.

Russian academic performance requirements for honors degrees (диплом с отличием / red diploma) require a weighted average of 4.5 or higher with no grades below 4. The red diploma is the Russian equivalent of graduating with distinction.

Conversion Formula

Russian 5-Point Scale → US 4.0 GPA:
5 — Отлично (Excellent) → 4.0 GPA
4 — Хорошо (Good) → 3.0 GPA
3 — Удовлетворительно (Pass) → 2.0 GPA
2 — Неудовлетворительно (Fail) → 0.0 GPA

Approximate: US GPA = (Russian grade - 2) × (4 / 3)

Worked Example

Student: Dmitri, M.Sc. Physics, Moscow State University

Dmitri's transcript shows mostly 5s with a few 4s. His average is 4.7/5.0.

Using the formula: (4.7 − 2) × (4/3) = 2.7 × 1.333 = 3.6 US GPA. Dmitri qualifies for the red diploma (отличие) and is competitive for US physics PhD programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use the formula: US GPA = (Russian Grade − 2) × (4/3). For a 5: (5−2) × 1.333 = 4.0. For a 4: (4−2) × 1.333 = 2.67. For a 3: (3−2) × 1.333 = 1.33. For your overall GPA, calculate your weighted average Russian grade first, then apply the formula. Alternatively, use the grade band table above for approximate conversions.
A grade of 5 (Отлично / Excellent) is the highest grade in the Russian system, equivalent to a 4.0 US GPA — an A. It represents outstanding work and complete mastery of the subject matter. In contrast to US grade inflation, receiving a 5 in Russia is genuinely competitive and not routine.
The red diploma (диплом с отличием) is awarded to students with outstanding academic performance — typically requiring a weighted grade average of at least 4.5/5.0 with no 3s or 2s on the transcript. It is the Russian equivalent of graduating with honors or distinction. Red diploma holders receive preferential consideration for graduate programs and competitive employment.
Yes. Russian degrees from accredited universities are accepted by US graduate programs. A credential evaluation from WES or another NACES-member organization may be required. Degrees from MGU, MIPT, SPBU, and Novosibirsk State University are well-recognized. Students should also verify their English proficiency requirements (TOEFL/IELTS) when applying to US programs.
A grade of 3 (Удовлетворительно / Satisfactory) is the minimum passing grade in the Russian system. It roughly corresponds to a C (2.0 GPA) in the US system. While a passing grade, too many 3s can prevent a student from receiving the red diploma and may signal weaker academic preparation to US graduate admissions committees. A student with mostly 4s and 5s is significantly more competitive.
