How to Use the Dean's List Calculator

The Dean's List recognizes students who achieve academic excellence in a given semester. Requirements vary by school, but typically require a GPA of 3.5 or higher while enrolled in at least 12 credit hours. This calculator checks your eligibility and tells you what grade you need in a final course to qualify.

  1. Check Status tab โ€” enter your semester courses with grades and credits, and set your school's Dean's List threshold (default 3.5).
  2. The result shows your GPA, credit count, and whether you qualify.
  3. What I Need tab โ€” enter all courses except one remaining course, enter the last course's credits, and see the minimum grade needed in that final course to make the list.

Dean's List Formula

Semester GPA = ฮฃ(Grade Points ร— Credits) รท ฮฃ(Credits)

Dean's List Qualifications (typical):
GPA โ‰ฅ 3.5 (most schools) or 3.3/3.7 (varies by institution)
Minimum 12 credit hours for the semester
No incomplete or failing grades (at many schools)

Required Grade Points in Last Course:
Needed = (Threshold ร— Total Credits) โˆ’ Current Points
Required GPA = Needed รท Last Course Credits

Worked Example

A student has completed 4 courses and has one remaining (3 credits):

English (3cr) A- โ†’ 3.7 ร— 3 = 11.1 pts
Math (4cr) B+ โ†’ 3.3 ร— 4 = 13.2 pts
Biology (3cr) B+ โ†’ 3.3 ร— 3 = 9.9 pts
History (3cr) A โ†’ 4.0 ร— 3 = 12.0 pts

Current total: 46.2 pts over 13 credits = GPA 3.55

For Dean's List (3.5 threshold ร— 16 total credits = 56.0 needed):
Points needed in last course = 56.0 โˆ’ 46.2 = 9.8
Required GPA in last course = 9.8 รท 3 = 3.27 โ†’ B+ or better

Dean's List Requirements by School Type

Requirements vary significantly across institutions. Here are common patterns:

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, at most institutions the Dean's List designation is noted on your official transcript for the semester(s) in which you qualified. It is a permanent record of academic achievement. Many schools also send a letter of recognition, and some make the list publicly available. Ask your registrar whether this distinction will appear on your degree completion documentation as well.
At some schools, yes. Many institutions have a separate part-time Dean's List for students enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours but at least 6. Requirements are typically the same GPA threshold but with a lower minimum credit count. Check your school's academic policies page or ask your academic advisor for the specific part-time eligibility criteria.
This varies by institution. Most schools count pass/fail credits toward the minimum enrollment requirement (12 credits) but exclude them from GPA calculation. Some schools with strict academic honor policies require that all credits used to meet the Dean's List credit minimum be graded courses. Taking too many pass/fail courses could reduce your graded credit hours below the threshold.
Yes โ€” many schools have tiered honor lists. The Dean's List typically recognizes students with a GPA of 3.5+, while the President's List or Chancellor's List is reserved for students with a 4.0 or near-perfect semester GPA. Not all schools use both tiers. Some institutions use "High Dean's List" for students with 3.8+ and "Dean's List" for 3.5โ€“3.79.
At many schools, yes. An incomplete (I) grade means the course is unresolved, and some institutions will not award Dean's List status until all grades are finalized. If you resolve the incomplete and your GPA meets the threshold, some schools will retroactively grant the designation for that semester. Check your school's academic calendar for the incomplete grade deadline.
